Hypothetically, if you were asked to give an engaging and empowering message to the collegians of the Class of 2026, what would you say?

    • It would probably be, is this the world you want? If it is, fine, you’ve got it. But if it isn’t, then what are you going to do about it?

      • Have been telling my kids and their friends they have come of age in unprecedented times and this political environment isn’t normal. They can use the technological advancements that are second nature to them to do good and please don’t forget the human connection side of the equation.

      • I’m a big reader of historical fiction and i decided that in 2026 I’m going to focus on reading about stories of people not like me. So far, I’ve read about generations of a Hawaiian family told through their gift of Hula. A based on reality story of a Japanese family interred at Manzanar and an amazing book written by two sisters about…

        • Thank you for sharing those titles. Your mention of Hula made me think of https://savingplaces.org/places/natatorium that I became aware of after staying in a nearby hotel. And meeting Johnny Angel, lifeguard and son of legendary Jose Angel when my son was surfing the North Shore as part of his college visit.

What risks did you take last year (2025) that paid off?

          • I hate to say it, but closing the club. I’ve been knocking off my writing assignments one by one, and running the club full time wasn’t allowing for that.

            • In a nation where efforts to deny Black contributions to world history are ever rising, I’m more committed than ever to sharing our stories. Last week, I was honored to speak with over 300 students across 10 classes about the Tuskegee Airmen’s contributions to Double Victory in WWII. My grandfather was an original Tuskegee Airman and took the…

              • Did you have the chance to see “FLY” at the Pasadena Playhouse back in 2016? It was a theatrical production about the Tuskegee Airmen. I had the pleasure of doing an installation for their on-site community gallery, and I had access to an amazing family archive of photos from LA artist Mark Greenfield, whose grandfather was a member of the Airmen.

              • This is so cool. And the additional context of your grandfather’s story from a quick search is even cooler !!! Love that you captured the story in a children’s book.

              • Dear God forgive our indifference – our search for ease – the tendency to ignore the need of our neighbor for a sense of protecting what we have. We have nothing other than each other.
