Here’s a normal conservative that I didn’t hate. I didn’t agree with his positions, but I can acknowledge that, within a democratic society, they were valid positions on the political spectrum, and not fascist. And I enjoyed his television appearances.

I agree. A reasonable and intelligent commentator who stuck to verifiable facts and avoided the spin doctoring that dominates “news” programs.

Lawrence and April… both nailed it in my opinion. Lawrence on the “breaking out of societal box”, there’s definitely a desire to be perceived as independent (cowboy aspirations), plus such a superiority complex and defensiveness about acknowledging white privilege.
