The Gilded Age shows the importance of Black folks behind the camera. It’s the first period drama that has done a Black storyline right. It shows the world of colorism, class, and wealth within the Black community during the post-Civil War era, and does it seamlessly as it examines the same within the white Robber Baron class.

This is a really excellent doc that I suggest everyone check out. It goes way beyond entertainment and explores how groundbreaking it was for Ed Sullivan to feature Black performers on his show, as well as the pushback he got for it behind the scenes and publicly. It’s on Netflix now.

Started watching this… my favorite quote so far from Ed is when talking about his parents. “They weren’t necessarily broad minded…. they were just sensible” when talking about their views on segregation/racism.

Saw it a few weeks ago and it was very good. Ed Sullivan stood on business when he knew it would cost him those ad dollars and piss off Southern affiliates that aired his show.
